From 4Ps Beneficiary to UN Advocate: Hanelie Millamina-Lopez's Inspiring Journey
Hanelie Millamina-Lopez's life is a testament to the power of hard work, resilience, and the transformative potential of education. Growing up in a family that struggled financially, Hanelie's path was not paved with ease. Yet, she defied the odds, breaking the cycle of poverty and emerging as a champion for the rights of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) on the international stage.
Hanelie's family, once beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), understands the program's significance firsthand. "Laking pasasalamat namin sa gobyerno dahil sa tulong na ito," (We are very grateful to the government for this assistance) Hanelie expresses, acknowledging the program's role in supporting her family's dream of educational attainment.
Contrary to negative perceptions about the program, Hanelie's story underscores the power of 4Ps in fostering self-reliance. The program, instead of fostering dependency, ignited a flame of determination within Hanelie. She balanced her studies with selling products to support herself, exemplifying the strong work ethic instilled in her family.
Hanelie's journey is marked by unwavering perseverance. Despite financial constraints, she eventually pursued higher education through the Expanded Students Grants-in-Aid Program for Poverty Alleviation (ESGPPA). This scholarship program, a collaboration between the DSWD and other government agencies, exemplifies the government's commitment to empowering individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Hanelie's dedication paid off, graduating cum laude with a degree in AB Sociology. This accomplishment opened doors, leading her to a career with the DSWD-5. In her role as the Regional Indigenous People Unit focal person, Hanelie continues to empower others, now advocating for the rights of IPs.
Hanelie's selection to represent the Philippines at the UN OCHA's Luxemburg Global Learning Event is a well-deserved recognition of her dedication and expertise. This opportunity allows her to share her experiences, learn from international peers, and further refine her skills in advocating for inclusivity and social justice.
Hanelie's story serves as an inspiration to many. It is a powerful reminder that with unwavering determination, access to education, and supportive programs like 4Ps and ESGPPA, even the most challenging circumstances can be overcome, paving the way for a brighter future not just for individuals, but for entire communities.
