How DepEd’s Self-Assessment Tool Supports Teacher Development

The Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines has implemented a Results-Based Performance Management System (RPMS) for teachers based on the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST). The RPMS aims to measure and improve teacher performance and professional development in alignment with the K to 12 curriculum and the global standards of teaching.

How DepEd’s Self-Assessment Tool Supports Teacher Development

One of the key components of the RPMS is the Self-Assessment Tool (SAT), which is a questionnaire that teachers use to reflect on their own strengths and areas for improvement. The SAT covers 19 objectives and four core behavioral competencies that are relevant to the teacher’s professional work. The SAT also helps teachers identify their level of capability and priority for development for each objective.

The SAT is administered electronically (e-SAT) through the DepEd email system. Teachers are expected to accomplish the e-SAT prior to the beginning of the school year and use it to monitor their progress throughout the RPMS cycle. The results of the e-SAT will guide the teachers and the school heads on which RPMS indicators to focus on and what interventions to provide. The e-SAT is also a basis for the Individual Performance Commitment and Review Form-Development Plan (IPCRF-DP), which is a document that outlines the teacher’s goals, action plans, and evidence of achievement.

The e-SAT is a valuable tool for teacher development because it enables teachers to:

  • Self-reflect on their current performance and professional growth
  • Set realistic and attainable goals for improvement
  • Seek feedback and coaching from peers and mentors
  • Engage in continuous learning and development activities
  • Track and document their achievements and challenges
  • Celebrate their successes and learn from their failures

By using the e-SAT, teachers can enhance their competencies and confidence, and ultimately, deliver quality education to their learners.
