Strengthening Science Education in the Philippines: A Look at DepEd Orders No. 73, s. 2008 and No. 51, s. 2010
The Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines has always been committed to enhancing the quality of education in the country. Two significant orders that have made a substantial impact in this regard are DepEd Order No. 73, s. 2008 and DepEd Order No. 51, s. 2010. These orders have played a crucial role in strengthening science education at the elementary level.
DepEd Order No. 73, s. 2008: Financial Assistance to the Special Science Elementary School (SSES) Project
DepEd Order No. 73, s. 2008 provides guidelines on the utilization of financial assistance to the Special Science Elementary School (SSES) Project. The Bureau of Elementary Education (BEE) downloaded Twenty-Six Million Five Hundred Thousand Pesos (26.5M) as financial assistance to the 57 pilot schools across the country. The funds were intended to support the activities pursuant to the pilot implementation of the SSES project.
The SSES project aims to enhance the science and mathematics curriculum in elementary schools, thereby fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation among young learners. The financial assistance provided under this order has been instrumental in supporting the pilot implementation of this project.
DepEd Order No. 51, s. 2010: Strengthening Science Education at the Elementary Level
DepEd Order No. 51, s. 2010 provides guidelines on strengthening science education at the elementary level. It was implemented through the Bureau of Elementary Education and increased the coverage of the SSES Project to 100 schools in the 16 regions. The financial subsidy was downloaded to implementing schools and regions to augment their resources to pursue innovations as reflected in their approved School Improvement Plans (SIP).
This order represents a significant expansion of the SSES project, extending its benefits to a larger number of schools and students. By augmenting the resources available to schools for implementing their School Improvement Plans, this order has empowered schools to pursue innovative approaches to science education.
DepEd Orders No. 73, s. 2008 and No. 51, s. 2010 have played a pivotal role in strengthening science education at the elementary level in the Philippines. By providing financial assistance and guidelines for the implementation of the SSES project, these orders have fostered a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation among young learners. As we move forward, it is crucial to continue supporting such initiatives that enhance the quality of education and equip our students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in the 21st century.
