Power Grid Status in Visayas Upgraded to Red Alert

19 April 2024 - The Visayas power grid has been upgraded to Red Alert status from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM today due to a higher forecasted demand in the Visayas and Mindanao regions. This has resulted in less power being shared by Mindanao through the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection.

The available capacity of the grid is currently at 2,484MW, while the peak demand has reached 2,504MW. The shortfall in power supply has led to the issuance of the Red Alert status, which is declared when the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.

In addition to the high demand, 18 power plants are currently on forced outage, while 10 others are running on derated capacities. This has resulted in a total of 757.7MW being unavailable to the grid.

Following the Red Alert period, a Yellow Alert will be in effect from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM. During a Yellow Alert, the total reserve power is less than the capacity of the largest online power plant, although supply still exceeds demand.

Residents are advised to conserve energy during these periods to help alleviate the strain on the power grid. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
