Former Congressman Arnulfo Teves Jr. Rearrested in Timor Leste

June 11, 2024 - The Department of Justice (DOJ) of the Philippines has acknowledged the decisive actions taken by the government and law enforcement authorities of Timor Leste in the recent rearrest of former Congressman Arnulfo Teves Jr.


Teves, a designated terrorist and fugitive from justice, is facing grave charges, including multiple murder. This apprehension marks a pivotal moment in the relentless pursuit of justice by the Philippine government.

Secretary of Justice Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla expressed his gratitude to the government of Timor Leste for their unwavering cooperation. “This rearrest underscores the robust partnership between our nations and our collective commitment to eradicating impunity, regardless of one’s social status or influence,” Remulla said.

The DOJ reaffirms that its actions are grounded in an unyielding quest for justice for the victims of these violent and brazen acts of murder. The pain and suffering of the victims’ families are not forgotten, and it is the department’s solemn duty to ensure that those responsible are held to account.

“We assure the public and the international community that all legal procedures will be strictly adhered to, and Mr. Teves’ human rights will be respected throughout this process,” Secretary Remulla continues. “However, we must also emphasize the relentless pursuit of justice for the victims and their families who have long awaited accountability. Any attempts to destabilize the relationship between our nations or undermine justice will not be tolerated.”

The DOJ unequivocally declares: there is no place for impunity in our society. The rule of law applies to all, without exception. The department anticipates the swift return of Mr. Teves to the Philippines and stands resolute in ensuring that justice is served.

“We look forward to Mr. Teves facing the charges against him in a court of law, and not anywhere else,” Secretary Remulla concludes. “Let this serve as a clear and unequivocal message: the Philippines remains steadfast in its pursuit of justice, and we will continue to uphold the principles of accountability and the rule of law.”
