In a world where sports often celebrate physical prowess and keen eyesight, Hernan N. Ilagan stands as a testament to determination and resilience. A Grade 6 learner at Bay Central Elementary School in Bay, Laguna, Hernan defies the odds as a Goalball player, despite being visually impaired.
"For me, qualifying for Palarong Pambansa is a big achievement. Winning would be a bonus, so we just enjoy playing the game," Hernan shares, reflecting his positive outlook and dedication to sports.
Goalball, a lesser-known sport to many, requires intense training and precision. Despite initially unfamiliar with the sport, Hernan found his passion and talent through Goalball. "At first, I didn't know much about Goalball, but as I experienced playing it, I gradually enjoyed it because it helped me discover my true abilities in sports," he explains.
Hernan's journey into Goalball wasn't his first venture into sports; initially drawn to Track and Field, he transitioned to Goalball when his division needed players. This shift marked a pivotal moment for Hernan, seeing it as a sign to excel in a new athletic endeavor.
This year, Hernan leads the Laguna Green Rangers Goalball Team. Beyond his role as captain, Hernan serves as a beacon of hope for his teammates and community. His teachers, coaches, and peers describe him as resilient and hopeful, epitomizing perseverance despite his visual impairment.
Beyond academics and athletics, Hernan also works as a construction laborer to support his family. However, his dreams extend beyond his current circumstances. He aims to finish his education and secure a better office job in the future.
As Hernan prepares for his third Palarong Pambansa, he eagerly anticipates new experiences and friendships in Cebu City, the host of this year's games. Aside from Goalball, he will also participate in Athletics, Running Long Jump, Shot Put, Bocce, and Swimming in the Paragames segment.
