Northern Mindanao Aims for Guinness World Record in Mass Bamboo Planting

July 17, 2024 - The Department of Science and Technology Region 10 (DOST-10), along with local governments and stakeholders across Northern Mindanao, is setting its sights on a new Guinness World Record. Their goal? To plant the most bamboo in a single hour.

This ambitious initiative was launched by DOST-10 in collaboration with Bukidnon officials and Cagayan de Oro City Hall. The mass planting activity is scheduled for late September, strategically coinciding with Philippine Bamboo Month and World Bamboo Day (September 18).

"The entire region of Northern Mindanao, including Cagayan de Oro City, will be participating in this event," declared City Administrator Roy Hilario Raagas during a recent flag raising ceremony. He added that a 10-hectare area in Sitio Pamalihi, Barangay Pangatpat, has been designated for the record-breaking attempt.

The City Agricultural Productivity Office and the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (CLENRO) will be at the forefront of organizing the activity. To ensure the attempt meets Guinness World Record standards, Raagas confirmed that a team of representatives will be present to validate the final tally.

This large-scale bamboo planting promises to be a significant event, not only for Northern Mindanao but for the entire Philippines. With careful planning and a collaborative effort, the region has a strong chance of achieving its record-breaking goal while promoting the environmental and economic benefits of bamboo.
