Philippines and South Korea Reaffirm Strong Ties on 75th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

July 09, 2024 - Senate President Francis "Chiz" G. Escudero met with Republic of Korea (ROK) Ambassador Lee Sang-hwa in a Courtesy Call, reaffirming their commitment to an even stronger relationship as the two nations celebrate 75 years of diplomatic ties.

The discussions focused on various areas of collaboration, including:

  • Defense: Supporting the Philippines' efforts to modernize its defense capabilities.
  • Infrastructure: Partnering on infrastructure development projects and attracting key investments.
  • Cultural Exchange: Promoting people-to-people relations and fostering appreciation for shared cultural trends.

Senator Escudero highlighted the Philippines' growing economy and emphasized the importance of legislation aimed at attracting foreign investments, such as the CREATE More Act and the 99-year land leasehold law.

Both sides agreed to prioritize the ratification of the Philippines-South Korea Free Trade Agreement, which is currently awaiting Senate approval.
