In a recent operation led by the National Bureau of Investigation-Human Trafficking Division (NBI-HTRAD), a woman was apprehended for attempting to sell an infant through social media for P25,000. The suspect, identified as 51-year-old midwife Christina Paule, allegedly advertised the days-old baby on Facebook.
NBI Director Jaime Santiago confirmed on Thursday that the arrest came following a tip-off from the Department of Justice - Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking – NBI CyberTip Center (DOJ-IACAT-NBI Cybertip). The operation was executed with support from the non-government organization Exodus Road Philippines.
Paule faces charges under Republic Act 7610, as amended, for violation of Child Trafficking laws, alongside offenses under Republic Acts 10175 and 9208 related to cybercrime prevention and anti-trafficking in persons.
The rescued infant has been entrusted to the care of the Department of Social Welfare and Development-National Capital Region. Undersecretary Janella Ejercito Estrada of the National Authority for Child Care (NACC) commended the swift action by government agencies, emphasizing the importance of combating child trafficking and illegal adoption.
"This arrest marks a critical step in our ongoing battle against child exploitation and illegal adoption," stated Undersecretary Estrada, who also chairs the newly-formed DOJ-IACAT-Technical Working Group on Anti-Illegal Adoption. She reiterated the commitment of various government bodies to safeguarding children and urged the public to report suspicious activities.
In a validation process, the NACC confirmed that the suspect had not undergone legal adoption procedures through their agency. The NBI continues its investigation into the case.
