Catching Up for Success: All About Catch-Up Fridays!
Have you heard about the buzz surrounding Catch-Up Fridays? This new initiative by the Department of Education (DepEd) promises to revitalize our education system by focusing on some crucial areas. Let's dive into the why, when, and what of Catch-Up Fridays, so you can be part of the positive change!
Why the Need for Catch-Up Fridays?
Two pressing areas demand attention: reading proficiency and values education. Studies reveal gaps in reading skills, while the need for strong moral grounding and a culture of peace resonates more than ever. Catch-Up Fridays addresses these concerns head-on.
When Does it Begin?
Catch-Up Fridays officially kicked off on January 12, 2024, and it's happening across all elementary and secondary schools, and even community learning centers nationwide!
What is the Purpose?
This initiative aims to bridge learning gaps and strengthen foundational skills like reading, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. It aligns with the National Learning Recovery Program, focusing on the National Reading Program, Values, Health, and Peace Education.
Structure and Schedule:
- Fridays in January: Dedicated to DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) in the first half, while teachers undergo training in the second half.
- Mid-year Break (January 26): Schools continue teacher orientation and encourage DEAR at home.
- Future Fridays: Dedicated to the National Reading Program in the morning and Values, Health, and Peace Education in the afternoon. Homeroom Guidance will also be included.
Who Facilitates and How is it Graded?
The same teachers as per the class program will facilitate Catch-Up Fridays, integrating Values, Health, or Peace Education themes into their subjects. It's all about interconnectivity and weaving essential lessons into different topics. And guess what? Catch-Up Fridays are not graded! The focus is on reinforcing learning, not adding pressure.
Monitoring Progress and Integrating Values:
Learners' progress will be tracked through Reflection Journals, where they can express their thoughts creatively. An integrative approach using content from various subject areas will be employed to build reading skills and understanding of values, health, and peace concepts. Monthly themes and subthemes will guide these integrations.
Engaging Strategies and Teacher Preparation:
Catch-Up Fridays will be dynamic and exciting, utilizing strategies like DEAR, Read-A-Thons, and expert-led forums. Teachers will prepare through Learning Action Cells and other professional development activities to share best practices and create engaging materials.
Community Involvement and Supervision:
School stakeholders are encouraged to participate! They can share their "3 Ts" - Time, Talent, and Treasure - to support and sustain Catch-Up Fridays. The school heads, along with the DepEd's CLMD and CID, will ensure proper implementation and compliance.
Catch-Up Fridays is an exciting step towards strengthening our education system. By focusing on crucial areas, encouraging engagement, and fostering collaboration, this initiative holds immense potential to empower learners and nurture well-rounded individuals. Let's get involved and make Catch-Up Fridays a success!
