DepEd MEMO No. 001, s. 2024: Catch-up Fridays to Ignite Reading, Values, and Peace Education Across the Philippines
Manila, Philippines - The Department of Education (DepEd) has unveiled a bold initiative called Catch-up Fridays, outlined in DepEd MEMO No. 001, s. 2024, to address learning gaps and prioritize holistic development in all elementary and secondary schools nationwide. Starting January 12, 2024, every Friday will be dedicated to a two-pronged approach:
- Drop Everything and Read (DEAR): This dedicated reading time aims to rekindle the joy of reading and enhance literacy skills across all schools and community learning centers (CLCs). Imagine classrooms and CLCs transformed into vibrant reading havens, fostering a love for literature and improving comprehension.
- Beyond Academics: Recognizing the importance of holistic development, Catch-up Fridays will also integrate crucial aspects of the MATATAG Education Agenda:
- Values Education: Emphasizing the Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) and Values Education Act, Catch-up Fridays will weave values education into its core, nurturing responsible citizens who contribute positively to society.
- Health Education: Promoting healthy habits and awareness will be a priority, laying the foundation for well-being and fostering a generation mindful of their physical and mental health.
- Peace Education: Addressing bullying concerns highlighted in the 2022 PISA results, Catch-up Fridays will equip students with peace competencies, transforming them into advocates for understanding and harmony within their communities.
- Orientation and Feedback: Recognizing the crucial role of educators, each Friday will also provide dedicated time for orientation on the program's guidelines and gathering valuable feedback from field implementers. This two-way communication ensures the program continues to evolve and adapt to the needs of all stakeholders.
