How Schools Will Commemorate the Edsa People Power Revolution
The Department of Education (DepEd) has issued a DepEd Memorandum No. 010. s. 2024 encouraging all schools to commemorate the 38th anniversary of the Edsa People Power Revolution, which took place from February 22 to 25, 1986. The theme for this year's celebration is "Edsa 2024: Pagkakaisa at Paninindigan laban sa mga Bagong Hamon sa Bayan" (Unity and Conviction Against the New Challenges to the Nation).
The Edsa People Power Revolution was an event that resulted in the end of the 20-year rule of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., who declared martial law, faced human rights allegations, and was accused of corruption. Millions of Filipinos gathered at the Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) to peacefully demand the restoration of democracy and freedom. Their collective action led to the departure of Marcos and the installation of Corazon Aquino as the new president.
The Edsa People Power Revolution is a symbol of the principles and values that the Philippines stands for, such as justice, human dignity, sovereignty, and solidarity. The commemoration aims to highlight people’s consciousness and promote greater awareness of these ideals.
According to the DepEd memorandum, all regional and schools division offices and schools are encouraged to observe the commemoration and undertake related activities such as the following:
Hoisting streamers depicting this year’s theme and logo;
Integrating the celebration in the different subject areas;
Discussing current issues involving children relative to protecting the country’s democracy and freedom in appropriate subject areas; and
- Organizing child-friendly activities such as art contest, poster-and-slogan-making, children’s fair, and/or photo exhibit of child-friendly materials regarding love of country and heroes of subsequent generations.
The memorandum also states that expenses incurred relative to the conduct of activities for the said celebration shall be charged to local funds, subject to the usual accounting and auditing rules and regulations.
Meanwhile, the current administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the son and namesake of the former ruler, has decided to remove the Edsa People Power Revolution anniversary as a public holiday in 2024. The president has also faced criticism for his policies and actions regarding democracy and human rights, as well as corruption and nepotism.
