Queen City of the South Prepares for Palarong Pambansa Homecoming
Cebu City, Philippines – February 2, 2024 – After a 30-year hiatus, the Queen City of the South gears up to welcome the prestigious Palarong Pambansa back to its shores. Today, Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte officially signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama, solidifying the city's hosting rights for the 64th edition of the national sports competition.
Cebu City emerged victorious in the bidding process, surpassing fellow contenders Antique and Negros Occidental. "This marks another step towards strengthening our grassroots sports programs," declared VP Duterte, emphasizing the event's importance in nurturing young athletic talent. "Palarong Pambansa provides a platform for our student-athletes to showcase their skills and gain valuable experience."
Mayor Rama expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging the competitive bidding process. "We promise to deliver a Palarong Pambansa that reflects Cebu's passion for sportsmanship and hospitality," he stated, invoking the city's patron saint, Sr. Sto. NiƱo, for guidance.
Cebu City boasts a rich history with the Palarong Pambansa, having hosted the event twice before - in 1954 and 1994. This year, the city anticipates welcoming over 12,000 student-athletes and their coaches, promising an energy-filled and competitive showcase of athletic prowess.
