The Flexibility of Private Schools in Adjusting Academic Calendars

The Flexibility of Private Schools in Adjusting Academic Calendars

In a recent announcement, the Department of Education (DepEd) clarified that private schools have the flexibility to adjust their academic calendars in line with public schools for the gradual return of the June-March school year. This decision comes as the DepEd issued Department Order 003, which set an earlier end date for the 2023-2024 school year in public schools, paving the way for the reintroduction of the old school calendar with April-May as the summer vacation period.

The Flexibility of Private Schools in Adjusting Academic Calendars

Private Schools' Autonomy

According to DepEd Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas, private schools that opened in July or June last year have the option to either maintain their approved calendar or adjust it accordingly. This means that private schools that aligned their opening dates with public schools in August are not mandated to adjust their academic calendars. This autonomy allows private schools to cater to the specific needs and preferences of their students and stakeholders.

The SY 2024-2025 Calendar

For public schools, the school year 2024-2025 is set to start on July 29, 2024, and end on May 16, 2025. As a result, the school break for this year will span from June 1 to July 28, including weekends. These dates provide a clear framework for planning and scheduling activities within the education system.

Future Projections

Undersecretary Michael Poa, citing DepEd's projections, indicated that the pre-pandemic June-March school calendar might return by the school year 2026-2027. This projection suggests that the school break could potentially begin in the first week of April during that academic year. While this timeline remains subject to change based on future developments, it offers a glimpse into the potential future adjustments in the academic calendar.

The DepEd's clarification regarding private schools' autonomy in adjusting their academic calendars aligns with the goal of accommodating the gradual return to the June-March school year. This flexibility allows private schools to tailor their schedules to meet the needs of their students and maintain harmony with the public school system. As the education landscape continues to adapt to the challenges brought about by the pandemic, these adjustments play a crucial role in ensuring a smooth transition and providing the best possible educational experience for all students.
