DOH Reminds Parents: ‘Ang batang bakunado, protektado!’ - Vaccinate Children to Combat Pertussis

In a significant public health campaign, the Department of Health (DOH) has launched an initiative under the slogan “Ang batang bakunado, protektado!” to combat the highly contagious Pertussis disease, commonly known as Whooping Cough. The campaign emphasizes the critical importance of vaccination for children, highlighting that an infected individual can potentially transmit the disease to up to 18 others, regardless of age.

The DOH stresses that the Pertussis vaccine is a crucial tool in reducing the risk of severe complications from the disease, which can be fatal, especially in infants. Pertussis is characterized by a high-pitched, strained breathing following a coughing fit, and in children, it can lead to apnea (a temporary cessation of breathing), breathing difficulties, and vomiting.

The health authorities urge immediate consultation at the nearest health center if severe coughing, cyanosis (bluish or purplish discoloration due to lack of oxygen), or breathing difficulties are experienced. The DOH’s proactive approach includes recommending vaccination for children aged 6 weeks to 23 months to ensure their safety, aligning with the nation’s vision of “Chikiting Ligtas” in the “Bagong Pilipinas, Bawat Buhay Mahalaga” initiative.

The campaign is part of the broader “8 Point Action Agenda” and is supported by the hashtags #DOH, #DepartmentOfHealth, #Health, #OneDOH, #BawatBuhayMahalaga, #BagongPilipinas, #KonsulTayo, #Pertussis, #KonsulTayoPertussis, reflecting the government’s commitment to safeguarding every life in the new Philippines through comprehensive health measures.
