In light of recent events, the Department of Education (DepEd) is conducting a thorough review of an incident report that has raised concerns about the enforcement of its child protection policy. The policy, established in 2012, defines child abuse as any action that undermines the inherent value and dignity of a child.

A spokesperson for DepEd, Mr. Bringas, emphasized the importance of a complete investigation to guide the department’s response in line with existing regulations. “We are verifying the report from the field and will require a complete incident report to determine the next course of action in accordance with existing DepEd policies,” he stated.

The Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC) has urged restraint in drawing conclusions, pointing out that the full context of the incident, which came to light through a video, is yet to be understood. The TDC also highlighted the necessity of instilling discipline in students while suggesting a reevaluation of the child protection policy.

TDC chairperson Benjo Basas called for a critical assessment of the current policies. “I-review itong policies natin on child protection, kung ito ba talaga ay nakakatulong ba o hindi sa atin,” Basas remarked, questioning the effectiveness of the policy in its current form.

Basas also addressed the challenges faced by educators in today’s sensitive climate. “Our teachers today are facing many cases related to that because this generation is very sensitive—not only the children but even the parents,” he added, indicating the complex dynamics between teachers, students, and parents.

The ongoing debate reflects a broader conversation about the balance between discipline and protection in educational settings, with implications for the well-being of both students and teachers. As the investigation proceeds, DepEd is expected to provide further updates on any policy changes or implementations.
