Commission on Human Rights Issues Strong Condemnation of Violence Against Girls
April 2, 2024 - The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has issued a strong statement condemning the recent horrific cases of violence and exploitation of young girls in the country. The CHR’s denouncement comes in the wake of two appalling incidents that have shocked the nation.
In the first case, a young Grade 2 student was tragically found deceased in Barangay Conel, General Santos City. The circumstances surrounding her death are deeply disturbing, with indications that she suffered assault and sexual violence prior to her demise on March 13, 2024.
The second case involves the arrest of a woman accused of exploiting her own children for online sexual activities. Law enforcement discovered materials indicative of child sexual exploitation involving the woman’s children and other minors in the family, with victims as young as 8 years old.
The CHR’s statement underscores the urgent need to protect the rights and safety of children, referencing Article 19 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). This article mandates that all necessary measures be taken to shield children from any form of harm or exploitation.
Authorities are commended for their ongoing efforts to bring justice in these cases, and the CHR urges continued, decisive action to prevent such atrocities from recurring. The Commission emphasizes that safeguarding children’s rights is a collective responsibility, vital to building a society that honors life, respect, and dignity.
The CHR reaffirms its unwavering commitment to championing the rights of the most vulnerable, particularly children, and calls upon all sectors of society to join in this crucial endeavor.
