Criminal Case Filed Over Viral Maltreatment of Philippine Tarsiers
April 11, 2024 - The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 12 has taken legal action against the individuals involved in the viral maltreatment of two Philippine tarsiers. The incident, which sparked outrage on social media, occurred in Barangay Maligo, Polomolok, South Cotabato.
In an official statement released on April 11th, DENR-12 Regional Executive Director, Amy Felix S. Alicer, announced that a criminal case has been filed against Ryan Parrefio and Sammy Estrebilla. The charges relate to violations of Section 27, paragraphs (f), and (h) of RA 9147 or the Wildlife Act of 2001, in relation to Section 20, paragraphs (a), and (b) of RA 7586, as amended by RA 11038 known as the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System (E-NIPAS) Act of 2018.
The DENR’s evaluation revealed that a crime had indeed been committed under the stated provisions of RA 9147. The filing of the case is intended to deter citizens from imitating such disturbing acts.
Director Alicer called on the public to assist the DENR in protecting and preserving wildlife species and the environment. She expressed gratitude for the public’s support and vigilance in reporting such incidents.
