The New Bilibid Prison (NBP), located in Muntinlupa City, Philippines, is more than just a correctional facility. It is a place where individuals are given a second chance at education and personal development. The prison’s Education and Training Section plays a crucial role in this transformative journey.
A Second Chance at Education
The NBP’s Education and Training Section provides a range of educational opportunities for persons deprived of liberty (PDL). These include elementary education, high school education, vocational training, and adult literacy programs. In addition, the prison also offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce.
In 2019, a total of 139 PDLs who passed the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) Test attended their recognition and graduation ceremony at the Maximum Security Compound (MaxSeCom) of the NBP. The ALS is a second-chance education program for out-of-school youth and adults, including PDLs who cannot read or write and those who would like to continue their studies while serving their sentence.
The Impact of Education on Rehabilitation
Education plays a significant role in the rehabilitation of PDLs. The comprehensive program seeks to help in the rehabilitation of medium-risk prisoners through education, livelihood, skills training, and development. Since its establishment in 1985, the extension school has produced more than 500 graduates.
The PDLs, once they graduate, are given certificates, diplomas, and transcripts of records and documents that do not indicate their status as prisoners. This allows them to apply for jobs and regain their dignity once they are released.
The Role of the Literacy Training Service
The Literacy Training Service (LTS) component of the National Service Training Program (NSTP) has also been applied at the NBP. This program trains students in teaching literacy and numeracy skills to schoolchildren, out-of-school youths, and other citizens in need of their services, including prison inmates.
Conclusion
The Education and Training Section of the New Bilibid Prison is a testament to the power of education in transforming lives. It provides PDLs with the opportunity to learn, grow, and prepare for a productive life after their sentence. Despite the challenges, the success of this program is a beacon of hope for those seeking a second chance at education and a brighter future.
