El Niño Weakens, Transition to Neutral Conditions Expected, La Niña Watch Issued
April 8, 2024 - The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has released EL NIÑO ADVISORY NO. 10 / LA NIÑA WATCH as of 05 April 2024, indicating a significant shift in climate patterns over the tropical Pacific Ocean. The current El Niño phenomenon is showing signs of weakening and is anticipated to continue through the March-April-May (MAM) 2024 season.
According to the latest climate models, there is an 83% chance of transitioning to ENSO-neutral conditions during the April-May-June (AMJ) 2024 season. Additionally, the models suggest a 62% chance for the development of La Niña during the June-July-August (JJA) 2024 season.
In response to these developments, PAGASA’s ENSO Alert and Warning System will maintain the El Niño Advisory while initiating a La Niña Watch. The agency commits to vigilant monitoring of El Niño’s progression, its impact on local weather patterns, and the potential emergence of La Niña.
PAGASA also plans to provide updates on regions at risk for meteorological dry spells and drought conditions. Government agencies and the public are urged to implement precautionary measures to lessen the adverse effects of these climatic events.
