A Historic Achievement
On April 21, 2024, Delgaco clinched her ticket to the Paris Games after placing fourth in the Final A of the women’s single sculls in the World Rowing Asian and Oceanian Qualification Regatta in Chungju, South Korea. She clocked 7 minutes and 49.39 seconds, securing one of the five Olympic berths up for grabs in the event.
A Journey of Perseverance
Delgaco’s journey to the Olympics was not an easy one. She had to overcome numerous challenges and setbacks. But her perseverance and dedication to the sport have finally paid off. "I never imagined that I’ll reach this far. Before, the stronger rowers used to get past me easily. Now, I’m able to beat them,” Delgaco told Radyo Sports Pilipinas.
Following in the Footsteps of Giants
Delgaco is the fourth Filipino rower to qualify for the Olympics, following in the footsteps of Edgardo Maerina (1988 Seoul Games), Benjamin Tolentino Jr. (2000 Sydney Games), and Cris Nievarez (2022 Tokyo Games). However, she is the first female rower from the Philippines to achieve this feat.
Looking Ahead
With her historic qualification, Delgaco has not only made her country proud but has also inspired countless young athletes to pursue their dreams. As she prepares for the Paris Games, she is expected to join fellow Filipino Olympic qualifiers in a month-long training camp in the city of Metz.
As we look forward to seeing Delgaco compete on the world stage, her story serves as a powerful reminder that with hard work, determination, and a little bit of luck, anything is possible.
