April 26, 2024 - In a significant move towards educational reform, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. approved the proposed Basic Education Development Plan (BEDP) 2030 and the MATATAG Agenda of the Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday. The initiatives are led by Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte.
During the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board meeting at the Malacañan Palace, President Marcos expressed his support for the DepEd’s proposals, emphasizing their importance to the country’s education system.
“The [NEDA] board approves the adoption of the Basic Education Development Plan 2023 and MATATAG Agenda as a national policy and plan for basic education,” President Marcos, who also chairs the NEDA Board, announced in the meeting.
Vice President Duterte was present during the NEDA Board meeting to present the BEDP 2030 and the MATATAG Agenda of the department.
The MATATAG Agenda comprises four critical components:
- MAking the curriculum relevant
- TAking steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education facilities and services
- TAking good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusive education, and a positive learning environment
- Giving support to teachers to be able to teach better.
DepEd’s BEDP 2030 and the MATATAG Agenda are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 4 on providing quality education. They are also consistent with the AmBisyon Natin 2040 and the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, according to the NEDA Board.
This approval marks a significant step towards improving the quality of education in the country and aligning it with global standards.
