DSWD Distributes Over Php3.7 Million in Aid Following Mt. Kanlaon Eruption

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has distributed over Php3.7 million worth of family food packs (FFPs) to beneficiaries in Central Visayas and Western Visayas, following the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon on Negros Island.

The eruption, which occurred on June 3, 2024, produced a 5,000-meter plume and triggered ashfall. The event led to the evacuation of hundreds of residents, with over 700 people fleeing to evacuation camps. As of June 10, 2024, the DSWD has provided significant aid to the affected families.

The DSWD’s assistance has been crucial in supporting the displaced families during this challenging time. The aid included not only food packs but also non-food items. The DSWD Field Office-Western Visayas alone distributed a total of P983,252 worth of food and non-food items to families affected by the eruption.

The eruption has caused over P11 million in damages6, and the DSWD’s aid has been instrumental in helping the affected families cope with the aftermath. The agency has assured that more potable water and hygiene kits will be delivered to ensure their basic needs are met.

The eruption of Mt. Kanlaon is one of the four volcanic activities that all happened on June 3 out of the 43 eruptions of Mt. Kanlaon, making up only 9.30% of recorded data. Despite the challenges, the response from the DSWD and other agencies has been swift and effective, demonstrating the strength of the Philippines’ disaster response system.

As the recovery efforts continue, the DSWD remains committed to providing ongoing support to the affected families and ensuring their well-being during this difficult time
