The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA) announced the official end of El Niño on Friday, June 7, 2024.
Conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean have returned to neutral levels, signifying the end of the El Niño phenomenon that began in 2023.
However, DOST-PAGASA also cautions that there's a high chance (about 69%) of a La Niña developing by the July-August-September 2024 season. As a result, the La Niña Watch remains in effect while the PAGASA ENSO Alert and Warning System is lowered to inactive (ENSO-neutral).
While the El Niño is over, some areas may still experience warmer than usual temperatures and below-normal rainfall due to the prevailing southwest monsoon. DOST-PAGASA urges the public and government agencies to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures against potential climate impacts.
For more information, the public can contact the Climate Monitoring and Prediction Section (CLIMPS) of DOST-PAGASA at (02) 8284-0800 local 4920 or 4921, or through email at pagasa.climps@gmail.com.
