From Palaro Medalist to UAAP Champion: The Journey of Van Alexander Obejas

The journey of Van Alexander Obejas, a student-athlete from Tacloban, Leyte, is a testament to the transformative power of sports. His story began in 2017 at the Palarong Pambansa held in Antique. For learner-athletes, this event is not just a platform for showcasing their skills but also a gateway to numerous opportunities, especially if they manage to secure a medal.

Van’s initial participation in the Palaro did not yield a medal, but it did not dampen his spirit. Instead, it fueled his determination to strive harder in the following years, eventually earning medals for Eastern Visayas. His efforts bore fruit in the 2018 Palarong Pambansa held in Vigan, where he won a Bronze Medal in the 110-meter hurdles. The following year, in Davao, he secured a Silver Medal in the 400-meter hurdles and a Gold Medal in the 110-meter hurdles.

The first gold medal marked a significant milestone in Van’s career, opening the floodgates to numerous blessings and opportunities. It was around this time that the National University recognized his potential and offered him a college scholarship and a chance to compete in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP).

Balancing academics and sports is a challenging task for any student-athlete. However, it also provides invaluable lessons in time management and discipline. These experiences have not only enriched Van’s life but also brought numerous benefits to his family.

Currently, Van is pursuing a degree in BS Civil Engineering and has been a part of the university’s Athletics Team for four years. His hard work and dedication were evident in the recently concluded UAAP Season 86. He won two Gold Medals in the 110-meter hurdles and 4x400 meter relay and two Silver Medals in the 4x100 meter relay and 400-meter hurdle. These achievements contributed significantly to the National University’s victory in the Men’s Athletics Division of UAAP Season 86.

Van’s journey from a Palaro medalist to a UAAP champion is a shining example of how sports can provide opportunities and change lives. His story serves as an inspiration to many young athletes, reminding them that with perseverance, determination, and passion, dreams can indeed become a reality.
