Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs) are taking a leap towards a globalized future, with a record-breaking 65 institutions landing spots in the prestigious World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI) 2024. This impressive number signifies the Philippines as one of the best performing countries in the rankings, claiming over 20% of the top 300 HEIs.
The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairperson, J. Prospero de Vera III, expressed his pride in the achievement, highlighting the "globalized outlook and competitiveness" of both public and private universities in the country. He attributes this success to the participation of HEIs in international assessments, allowing them to track progress and identify areas for improvement.
"The collective efforts of Philippine HEIs, assisted by CHED and the national government, are now showing results," said de Vera. He pledged continued support for universities in their pursuit of international recognition. CHED's plan includes accelerating internationalization efforts, fostering partnerships with foreign universities, and facilitating university-to-university linkages.
WURI is one of the three CHED-recognized ranking systems that gauge HEI internationalization. Unlike other ranking systems, WURI specifically focuses on universities that make significant contributions to society through innovative approaches in research and educational programs.
HEIs Leading the Charge in Innovation
The 65 HEIs that made the WURI 2024 list represent the diversity and excellence of Philippine higher education. Here are some of the top-ranked institutions:
- Far Eastern University - Dr. Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation (60th)
- FEU Institute of Technology (72nd)
- St. Paul University Philippines (78th)
- Cebu Normal University (95th)
The complete list of ranked HEIs can be found on the CHED website.
Beyond Rankings: Strengthening Global Connections
While achieving high rankings is commendable, CHED recognizes the importance of fostering deeper global connections. To this end, the commission is actively securing agreements between Philippine HEIs and foreign universities. These partnerships aim to enhance curriculum programs, provide training opportunities, and facilitate student exchange programs.
This focus on internationalization is a positive development for Philippine higher education. It signifies a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and preparing Filipino graduates to compete in a globalized world.
