In a recent address, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. urged the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) to collaborate closely with the government. The goal is to ensure that the country’s energy infrastructure remains secure, reliable, and capable of meeting the growing demands.
The President emphasized the importance of renewable energy, stating that it is not just a source of power, but a beacon of resilience, innovation, and forward-thinking spirit for the nation. This statement aligns with his administration’s top priorities of ensuring an unhampered supply of energy and promoting the use of renewable energy sources.
President Marcos Jr.'s commitment to energy efficiency and renewable energy has been evident in his policies. Earlier this year, he issued an order directing government offices to conserve and use energy more efficiently in anticipation of increased power demand brought about by El NiƱo. This move was part of a long-term program aimed at reducing government consumption of electricity and petroleum products.
The NGCP has shown support for green energy and has plans to connect more renewable energy plants to the grid in the coming years. They have also proposed amendments to the Grid Code to prepare the country’s power system for the influx of gigawatt-scale variable renewable energy capacities.
The Department of Energy (DOE) has endorsed 13 proposed renewable energy and energy storage projects with a total potential capacity of over 2,900 megawatts (MW) to the NGCP for the conduct of a system impact study. This move is part of the efforts to achieve the country’s goals of scaling up renewable energy generation on the power system and ensuring sustainable, secure, reliable, accessible, and affordable energy.
Through these collective commitments and actions, the Philippines is making strides towards a future powered by renewable energy. As President Marcos Jr. said, renewable energy serves as a guiding light, showing the nation’s resilience, innovations, and forward-thinking spirit.
