July 16, 2024 - Jamal Rahmat "JR" Pandi of Poona Bayabao, Lanao del Sur, BARMM proved he is still the king of Badminton Secondary Boys in Palarong Pambansa 2024. He successfully defended his title after defeating Lovic Javier of Western Visayas in the finals match held yesterday at the Metro Sports Center Cebu.
As a seasoned athlete who has competed in various local and international tournaments, JR admits feeling the pressure during the game. The memory of his Silver Medal finish at the recent 13th Asean School Games last May was still fresh in his mind.
"I felt a little pressured because of too many things outside the court, and of course, my opponent is also someone I compete with in other tournaments, so there was that pressure that I couldn't afford to lose," JR said.
Despite the pressure, he remained determined and delivered an impressive performance, leading him to victory.
JR is now setting his sights on achieving the ultimate goal - a gold medal in an international tournament.
"I hope to become a champion in an international [tournament] someday. Because the highest I've achieved so far is just a silver medal, so I want to win another gold medal for the Philippines."
As a student of Ragayan National High School and a Maranao, JR expressed his gratitude to everyone who supports him, especially those from BARMM.
"Thank you to all those who support me, I can feel your support even from those who weren't able to watch," he shared.
JR's win marks the second gold medal for BARMM in Palarong Pambansa 2024. Joeharry Bones previously clinched the gold medal in Category 5 (Over 55 kg & not exceeding 59 kg) for Taekwondo Secondary Boys.
JR's triumph serves as an inspiration to young people from BARMM who aspire to excel in sports. It demonstrates that with hard work, perseverance, and determination, anything is possible.
