July 09, 2024 - The fight against illegal drugs requires a united front, and that means including everyone in society. The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) understand this, which is why they've launched the creative and impactful Buhay Ingatan, Droga’y Ayawan (BIDA) Challenge.
This program goes beyond simply keeping drugs off the streets. It focuses on rehabilitation and reintegration by giving Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) a platform to express themselves through art.
What is the BIDA Challenge?
The BIDA Challenge is a nationwide competition for PDLs across the Philippines. It features three categories:
- Painting: This category allows PDLs to showcase their artistic talents and creativity through visual storytelling.
- Handicraft-Making: This category taps into the resourcefulness and traditional skills of PDLs, encouraging them to create beautiful and functional objects.
- Songwriting: This category provides a powerful outlet for PDLs to express their emotions, experiences, and hopes for a brighter future, potentially inspiring others in the fight against drugs.
Why is the BIDA Challenge Important?
According to the DILG, the BIDA Challenge serves a two-fold purpose:
- Enhancing Productivity: By providing PDLs with a creative outlet, the challenge aims to keep them productively engaged, fostering a sense of purpose and accomplishment.
- Promoting Creativity and Artistry: The competition highlights the talents and skills of PDLs, potentially opening doors to future opportunities and fostering a sense of self-worth.
Beyond Rehabilitation
The BIDA Challenge isn't just about rehabilitation within prison walls. It's about showcasing the potential of PDLs and creating a pathway for successful reintegration into society upon release.
This initiative highlights a crucial but often overlooked aspect of anti-drug campaigns: prevention through rehabilitation and empowerment. By fostering creativity and offering a chance to heal, the BIDA Challenge creates a more positive and productive environment for PDLs, contributing to a safer future for the Philippines.
