July 14, 2024 - Today, on July 14th, we celebrate International Non-Binary People's Day in the Philippines and around the world! This day is dedicated to raising awareness of non-binary identities and experiences, and showing our support for the vibrant non-binary community here in the Philippines.
What is Non-Binary?
Non-binary is a term for people who don't identify exclusively as male or female. Their gender identity can exist on a spectrum between or outside of the traditional categories. Some non-binary people may identify with both masculine and feminine traits, while others may feel completely separate from the gender binary altogether.
Why is International Non-Binary People's Day Important in the Philippines?
The Philippines has a rich and complex history of gender identity. While the concept of non-binary may be relatively new to some, there are existing terms in some Filipino cultures that describe genders beyond male and female. Celebrating International Non-Binary People's Day allows us to:
- Raise awareness: Many Filipinos may not be familiar with non-binary identities. This day is a chance to educate ourselves and others about the experiences of non-binary people.
- Promote inclusion: Let's create a more inclusive society where everyone feels safe and respected, regardless of their gender identity.
- Celebrate diversity: The Philippines is a beautiful tapestry of cultures and identities. Let's celebrate the richness of non-binary experiences in our communities.
How can you celebrate in the Philippines?
- Educate yourself: Learn more about non-binary identities and the challenges faced by the non-binary community.
- Spread awareness: Share information and resources about International Non-Binary People's Day on social media.
- Use respectful language: Learn how to use someone's preferred pronouns and avoid making assumptions based on appearance.
- Support non-binary creators: Check out art, music, and writing by non-binary Filipinos.
- Donate to LGBTQ+ organizations: Support organizations working to create a more inclusive Philippines for everyone.
Together, let's make the Philippines a more understanding and welcoming place for non-binary people. Happy International Non-Binary People's Day!
