LTO Apprehends Over 10,000 Motor Vehicles in June Crackdown on Unregistered Vehicles

July 01, 2024 - The Land Transportation Office (LTO) apprehended a total of 10,461 motor vehicles nationwide in June as part of their ongoing campaign against unregistered vehicles. This aggressive campaign aims to improve road safety in the Philippines.

LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II, reported that motorcycles topped the list of apprehended vehicles with 6,824, followed by tricycles (1,787), private vans (954), private sedans (451), and trucks (230).

"This is a testament to the LTO's commitment to ensuring that all vehicles are registered," said Assec Mendoza. "Vehicle registration is not just a government requirement; it's a safety measure. The registration process includes a roadworthiness inspection to ensure the safety of all road users."

Mendoza emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime J. Bautista's vision of a safe road environment for all Filipinos.

Out of the apprehended vehicles, 9,212 were issued traffic violation tickets, while 1,601 were impounded. Some of the impounded vehicles were operating as public transportation without the necessary permits, commonly known as "colorum" vehicles.

Assec Mendoza previously issued a memorandum to Regional Directors, stating that a court order is mandatory for the release of any vehicle apprehended and impounded during anti-colorum operations.

"The LTO remains committed to aggressively pursuing unregistered and colorum vehicles," said Assec Mendoza. "This is part of our mandate to ensure the safety of everyone on the road."
