July 09, 2024 - The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has collected P986.5 million from motorists apprehended for traffic violations during the first semester of 2024. This figure is attributed to stricter enforcement of traffic laws following the directive of Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime J. Bautista to prioritize road safety.
"The almost P1 billion collection from fines and penalties alone is a result of the hard work of our law enforcers and other personnel on the ground," said LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Atty. Vigor D. Mendoza II. "We cannot achieve this without their dedication and commitment to ensure road safety."
Data from the LTO shows that a total of 330,073 motorists were apprehended nationwide from January to June for various offenses. While not all have settled their fines, the collected amount signifies a significant portion.
"We expect this number to increase as more settle their penalties and fines," said Assec. Mendoza. "We urge them to do so promptly to avoid incurring additional charges."
"While the LTO ideally wouldn't want motorists to pay fines, we have a responsibility to enforce traffic laws and promote road safety," he added.
The LTO's target revenue collection for 2024 is P33 billion. Assec. Mendoza expressed confidence in achieving this goal, highlighting that the LTO has already collected P17.9 billion from January to May, a 34% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Revenue sources beyond fines include motor vehicle user charges and driver's license transactions.
Assec. Mendoza reassured the public of transparency in all collections and remittances to the national treasury, emphasizing the importance of good governance under the administration of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr.
