July 22, 2024 - President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivered his State of the Nation Address (SONA) today, promising significant improvements in benefits and allowances for public school teachers. The president assured that these measures aim to alleviate the challenges faced by educators in fulfilling their vital roles in the country's educational system.
During his address, Marcos Jr. highlighted the recent enactment of the Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act, which includes provisions for a teaching allowance. This allowance, amounting to P10,000 annually, is intended to cover expenses related to teaching materials, addressing a longstanding need in the education sector.
Additionally, the government will extend personal accident insurance through the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) to public school teachers. This initiative aims to provide financial security to educators, particularly those serving in hardship posts.
Furthermore, President Marcos Jr. emphasized the removal of barriers for teachers, such as unpaid debts hindering license renewal. He underscored the importance of allowing educators to continue teaching without such impediments, ensuring their livelihoods and professional growth.
Despite these advances, the president did not discuss a salary increase for public school teachers in his speech.
The initiatives outlined by Marcos Jr. reflect a commitment to bolstering support for educators, recognizing their pivotal role in shaping the nation's future through quality education.
