July 05, 2024 - In the wake of Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara’s appointment as the new Education Secretary, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has issued a clear directive to the Department of Education (DepEd): prioritize the welfare of teachers.
Speaking during a financial assistance distribution event in Sulu, President Marcos emphasized the crucial role teachers play in society and underscored the need to ensure they are well-supported, both financially and professionally.
"We have to take care of the teachers," President Marcos stated. "We need to ensure that they can adequately support their families because we sometimes overlook the fact that teachers have households to sustain."
The President acknowledged that this support is essential for teachers to focus on their primary duty of educating students effectively. He also highlighted plans to retrain educators to keep pace with technological advancements and evolving educational practices.
President Marcos further outlined initiatives to enhance feeding programs in schools, aimed at addressing the country’s stunting issue among children.
The President’s remarks came following Vice President Sara Duterte's resignation as DepEd Secretary, with Angara set to assume office on July 19. During the recent Cabinet meeting, President Marcos confirmed Angara’s acceptance of the role, hinting at potential policy adjustments under his leadership.
