July 03, 2024 - Pope Francis extended his warm greetings to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. and the Filipino people during a notable diplomatic exchange at the Vatican. This marks a significant reconnection since the Pope’s visit to the Philippines in 2015.
Archbishop Paul Gallagher, Vatican Secretary for Relations and States, conveyed the Pope’s message during his visit to President Marcos at the Malacañan Palace. "The Holy Father is sending you his greetings, Your Excellency, as he remains deeply connected to the Filipino people and the Church in the Philippines," Archbishop Gallagher remarked.
Recognizing the Filipinos’ profound contributions to the Catholic Church worldwide, Archbishop Gallagher praised their steadfast faith and dedication. He emphasized the pivotal role Filipinos play in spreading the faith globally, especially through their work and presence.
Accompanying Archbishop Gallagher were Archbishop Charles J. Brown, Apostolic Nuncio to the Philippines, Monsignor Giuseppe Trentadue, and Monsignor Giuseppe Siviero from the Secretariat of the State of the Holy See.
President Marcos reciprocated Pope Francis’ good wishes and highlighted the enduring relationship between the Philippines and the Holy See, which was established over 73 years ago on April 8, 1951.
Archbishop Gallagher’s visit to the Philippines includes participation in the Plenary Session of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) in Malaybalay, Bukidnon. He is scheduled to celebrate Mass with bishops at the Abbey of the Transfiguration on July 4 and deliver an address at the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on July 5.
The visit underscores the thriving diplomatic ties and spiritual connection between the Philippines and the Vatican, reflecting a renewed commitment to cooperation and dialogue.
