July 27, 2024 - Over 1,200 public schools in several regions across the country will postpone their opening on Monday, July 29, 2024, due to extensive damage from Typhoon Carina and recent monsoon rains, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced on Saturday.
The postponements will affect schools in the National Capital Region (NCR), Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, and parts of SOCCSKSARGEN, including Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, and General Santos City.
In the NCR, schools in Malabon, Pasig, Marikina, and Valenzuela will now open on August 5, 2024. Schools in Navotas, Manila, San Juan, and Quezon City are also rescheduling their openings to the same date.
In the Ilocos Region, approximately 544 schools will open between July 29 and August 5, while 442 schools in Central Luzon will experience a similar delay. In SOCCSKSARGEN, four schools near the Ligurian Marsh in Cotabato will open on August 5.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara explained that the delays are necessary due to the significant repairs and clean-up needed. “The postponement of school openings in some areas is inevitable. We need to address the extensive damage before classes can resume,” Angara stated.
A comprehensive list of schools with rescheduled openings will be released soon. Schools in areas with minimal damage will proceed with their original opening date on July 29. Regional directors will work closely with school principals to assess each school's readiness and ensure a safe return for students.
“Schools that have been severely affected will not be forced to open on Monday,” Angara added, emphasizing the department’s commitment to ensuring a safe and effective start to the school year.
