Schools Struggle with Shortage of Guidance Counselors

July 06, 2024 - The Philippines faces a growing shortage of guidance counselors in its schools, according to data presented to the Second Congressional Commission on Education (EDCOM 2).

The alarming trend shows less than half of the country's needed guidance counselor positions have been filled since 2018. This lack of qualified professionals comes at a critical time, as schools grapple with rising concerns about student bullying and mental health.

"Ayon sa data (According to the data)," the commission reported, "very few graduates are taking guidance counselor courses, and even fewer are pursuing the necessary licenses to practice."

EDCOM 2 emphasized the importance of guidance counselors in addressing these challenges. They play a vital role in supporting students' academic, social, and emotional well-being.

The source of this information is a combination of data from the Department of Education (DepEd) Government Manpower Information System and the Commission on Higher Education's (CHED) higher education enrollment and graduation data.
