DepEd Adopts Lower Hardship Index for Teachers' Special Allowance

August 12, 2024 - The Department of Education (DepEd) has announced the adoption of a lower hardship index for public school teachers, making more educators eligible for the Special Hardship Allowance (SHA).

DepEd Memorandum No. 045, s. 2024, issued on August 12, 2024, adopts DepEd Order No. 017, s. 2023, which lowers the hardship index cut-off from 0.37 to 0.33. This means that more schools will qualify for the SHA, providing additional support for teachers in challenging work environments.

The move is in line with the government’s commitment to improve the welfare of teachers and ensure quality education for all. The DepEd is currently developing new guidelines for the SHA, which will be implemented after its release. Until then, DO 017, s. 2023 will remain in effect.
