Carlos Edriel “Caloy” Yulo, now a two-time gold medalist at the Paris Olympics 2024, began his journey in gymnastics at Aurora A. Quezon Elementary School (AAQES), SDO Manila. His early years were marked by the guidance and support of his teacher-coach, Ma’am Ezra Canlas, who played a significant role in his development both as a student and an athlete.
Caloy was known for his quiet demeanor and kind nature. Despite being an average student academically, his passion for gymnastics was evident from a young age. He balanced his schoolwork, play, and rigorous training with remarkable discipline. His dedication to the sport was clear, as he often performed at school events alongside his teammates, Ivan Cruz and John Matthew Vergara, who are also now accomplished Filipino gymnasts.
Ma’am Ezra, affectionately called Mommy Ez, recalls how Caloy’s natural talent was honed by various trainers over the years. Despite his growing skills, Caloy remained humble, often downplaying his achievements and attributing his success to luck. His intense training sessions sometimes left his hands bleeding, but his determination to improve kept him going with a “No pain, no gain” mindset.
The bond between Ma’am Ezra and Caloy was strengthened during their time together at various competitions. In Zamboanga del Norte, they spent 16 days together, traveling two hours each way to the Polanco Gym. Ma’am Ezra took care of Caloy, ensuring he was well-fed, hydrated, and healthy, especially since he had asthma and couldn’t afford to get sick far from home.
Ma’am Ezra always believed in Caloy’s potential, recognizing his exceptional skill and passion for gymnastics. Even when he competed with a fever in Cagayan de Oro, he managed to sweep all the gold medals in the Individual All Around competition, showcasing his resilience and dedication.
As a teacher-coach, Ma’am Ezra is filled with pride and joy for her former student and trainee. Caloy’s achievements at the Paris Olympics 2024, where he became the first Filipino to win a gold medal in gymnastics, are a testament to his hard work and perseverance. His success brings immense honor to the Philippines, and his AAQES family couldn’t be prouder of his accomplishments.
