August 20, 2024 – Public school teachers are set to receive a significant boost in their healthcare benefits with the implementation of a Php 7,000 medical allowance starting in fiscal year 2025. This substantial increase from the previous Php 500 allowance will allow teachers to avail of HMO-type benefits, providing them with more comprehensive healthcare coverage.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. approved Executive Order No. 64, s. 2024, which grants the medical allowance to all eligible government civilian personnel, including public school teachers. Education Secretary Sonny Angara expressed optimism that pooling the allowance will enable teachers to secure comprehensive insurance coverage.
Aside from the enhanced medical allowance, teachers will also benefit from the Php 5,000 tax-free teaching allowance for the current school year, which is set to increase to Php 10,000 starting in School Year 2025-2026 under the Kabalikat sa Pagtuturo Act.
The Department of Education also reminded its personnel of the existing Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) Personal Accident Insurance (GPAI) policy, which offers coverage for accidental death or dismemberment up to Php 100,000 and medical reimbursement up to Php 30,000.
These initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to improving the welfare and well-being of public school teachers.
