September 04, 2024 - In a bid to enhance educational access for Filipino learners, Senator Win Gatchalian has advocated for the establishment of schools closer to communities. During the Committee on Basic Education hearing on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, Gatchalian expressed strong support for local bills aimed at constructing more schools nationwide.
“Schools should be closer to children to encourage attendance and promote access to learning,” Gatchalian emphasized. “If the schools are closer to the community, you get better participation rates because it’s convenient to them, and you reduce drop out.”
The senator’s push aligns with the broader goal of improving the country’s education system, which has faced challenges such as high dropout rates and low participation in remote areas. According to the Department of Education, the dropout rate in the Philippines was approximately 6.9% in 2023, with rural areas being the most affected.
In the same hearing, the committee also discussed bills proposing the declaration of National Education Support Personnel Day. This initiative aims to recognize the invaluable contributions of education support personnel, who play a crucial role in the functioning and success of schools.
Gatchalian’s advocacy for better educational infrastructure and recognition of support personnel highlights the ongoing efforts to address educational disparities and improve the quality of education in the Philippines.
