The Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines has officially announced the administration of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2025 Main Survey. This initiative, spearheaded by the Bureau of Education Assessment (BEA), aligns with DepEd’s goal of evaluating and improving the country’s educational system on a global scale.
What is PISA?
PISA is an international study that assesses the knowledge and skills of 15-year-old students across various countries. Unlike traditional examinations that focus on rote memorization, PISA evaluates students' abilities to apply their learning to real-world scenarios. This ensures that learners are equipped with essential competencies required for higher education and employment. The 2025 PISA assessment will emphasize Learning in the Digital World (LDW), reflecting the increasing role of technology in education.
PISA 2025 in the Philippines
The Philippines will conduct the PISA 2025 Main Survey using a computer-based format (CBA) to assess students in key areas such as Reading, Mathematics, and Science. The testing window is set for March 10 to April 11, 2025, spanning approximately 23 days.
How Will Schools Participate?
DepEd, through its Bureau of Education Assessment (BEA), will coordinate with selected schools to facilitate the administration of the assessment. School heads and division offices are expected to support the program by ensuring smooth test delivery and participation.
To assist in implementing this survey, DepEd will utilize the Support Funds (SPF) allocated to regional and division offices. These funds will be used for training and logistical support related to PISA 2025.
Why is PISA Important?
Benchmarking Education Standards – PISA provides a global comparison of student performance, helping policymakers and educators assess the strengths and weaknesses of the current curriculum.
Data-Driven Policy Making – The results of the PISA survey inform future education policies and reforms to enhance student learning outcomes.
Enhancing 21st Century Skills – By focusing on real-world applications of knowledge, PISA encourages schools to prioritize skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and digital literacy.
Final Thoughts
The participation of the Philippines in PISA 2025 is a significant step toward improving the quality of education in the country. As technology becomes more integral to learning, assessing students’ digital literacy and problem-solving abilities is crucial. DepEd’s commitment to this initiative reflects its dedication to equipping Filipino students with the skills necessary to thrive in the modern world.
