As part of its ongoing commitment to ensuring the well-being of learners across the Philippines, the Department of Education (DepEd) is once again marking the National Oral Health Month this February 2025. With the theme "Pamilya Una Kong Dentista", this year’s celebration underscores the vital role that families and caregivers play in promoting oral health, especially for learners with disabilities.
A National Initiative for Better Oral Health
The 21st National Oral Health Month celebration, organized through the Bureau of Learner Support Services-School Health Division (BLSS-SHD), is an opportunity to shine a spotlight on oral health practices and foster awareness of their importance for learners' overall well-being. This celebration is especially significant in light of the DepEd’s ongoing efforts to improve access to quality health services for students, ensuring that oral health care is an accessible, essential part of a learner’s educational experience.
This initiative ties directly into two critical DepEd policies:
- DepEd Order No. 028, s. 2018 – Policy and Guidelines on Oplan Kalusugan, which promotes comprehensive health programs for learners.
- DepEd Order No. 33, s. 2019 – Implementing Guidelines on the Comprehensive Oral Health Program, which focuses on integrating oral health education into school health programs, preventing oral diseases, and collaborating with various stakeholders.
Focusing on Inclusion and Awareness
The primary goals of the 21st National Oral Health Month are:
- Raising awareness about the importance of oral health among learners and their families.
- Promoting inclusivity and ensuring the protection of children with disabilities, particularly by ensuring they have access to essential oral health care services.
A Month-Long Celebration with Engaging Activities
DepEd offices across the nation, from the central office to regional offices (ROs) and schools division offices (SDOs), are being encouraged to participate in a variety of awareness-raising activities. These activities will foster a deeper understanding of the importance of oral health and empower families and caregivers to take an active role in maintaining it.
Suggested activities for the month-long celebration include:
First Week: Oral Health Awareness Campaigns
- Schools should launch school-wide campaigns to raise awareness about oral health, tailored specifically to the needs of students with disabilities.
- Utilize online platforms and media channels to share advocacy materials from DepEd and the Philippine Dental Association (PDA).
Second Week: Oral Health Workshops and Seminars
- Organize classroom-based lectures or discussions on oral health education, giving students the tools to adopt healthy habits.
- Host parent and caregiver orientation sessions to teach basic oral health practices.
Third Week: Delivery of Dental Services
- Collaborate with local dental clinics or practitioners to offer on-site dental check-ups for students.
- Provide free consultations and check-ups at school-based clinics.
Fourth Week: Interactive Workshops
- Set up interactive workshops featuring hands-on activities where learners can practice brushing techniques.
- Provide students with free toothbrushes and toothpaste to support their oral health journey.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
For successful execution of these activities, the DepEd’s school dentists are encouraged to coordinate with local chapters of the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) and other stakeholders. By working together, schools can provide more comprehensive and accessible dental services to all students, ensuring a lasting impact on oral health practices.
Ensuring a Healthier Future for All Learners
The 21st National Oral Health Month serves as a crucial reminder that oral health is an integral part of a learner's overall well-being and education. By incorporating oral health awareness and services into schools and engaging families in the process, the Department of Education is working towards creating an inclusive and healthy environment where every learner—regardless of ability—can thrive.
