Classroom Awards: Recognizing Excellence in the K to 12 Basic Education Program

Recognition plays a vital role in motivating students and fostering a culture of excellence. In line with this, the Department of Education (DepEd) has established Policy Guidelines on Awards and Recognition to ensure that learners in the K to 12 Basic Education Program are fairly acknowledged for their achievements.

Classroom Awards are given within each class or section to honor students' academic performance, conduct, and other outstanding qualities. These awards can be granted quarterly, per semester, or at the end of the school year, reinforcing students' dedication and hard work.

1. Performance Awards for Kindergarten

For young learners in Kindergarten, awards recognize their most prominent abilities and significant improvements in various skill areas, such as fine-motor skills, communication, and creativity.

🔹 Since Kindergarten learners do not receive numerical grades, teachers assess their achievements based on learning domains and competencies in the curriculum.
🔹 To promote inclusivity, multiple learners can receive awards based on their strengths.
🔹 Teachers may create unique award titles that reflect the culture and language of their school community.

Examples of Kindergarten Awards:

✔ Most Improved in Writing ✍️
✔ Best in Storytelling 📖
✔ Creative Thinker Award 🎨
✔ Friendly and Kind Award 🤝

2. Conduct Awards

These awards acknowledge students who consistently exhibit good behavior and positive character traits, as aligned with the DepEd Core Values (Maka-Diyos, Makatao, Makakalikasan, Makabansa).

2.1. Character Traits Awards (Kindergarten to Grade 3)

Younger learners (K–3) are recognized for positive attitudes, values, and behavior improvements.

🔹 Teachers have the flexibility to name awards creatively to suit their school's context.

2.2. Conduct Awards for Grades 4 to 12

For older students (Grades 4–12), Conduct Awards are granted at the end of the school year based on teachers' evaluations.

✔ Students must demonstrate DepEd Core Values consistently.
✔ A minimum of 75% "Always Observed" (AO) in the report card (at least 21 out of 28 AO marks).
No disciplinary infractions leading to suspension or higher sanctions.

These awards help reinforce positive behavior and good citizenship among students.

3. Academic Excellence Awards

Students in Grades 1 to 12 who achieve high academic performance are given the Academic Excellence Award every quarter.

Categories of Academic Excellence Awards:

Award TitleQuarterly Average Grade

✔ Represent the school in in-school or off-campus events (e.g., competitions, educational programs).

This award encourages students to be consistent and responsible in their studies.

Conclusion

Classroom Awards in the K to 12 Basic Education Program are more than just recognitions—they motivate learners, promote positive values, and encourage perseverance in both academics and behavior. By implementing these awards fairly and consistently, teachers and schools help create an environment where every student has the opportunity to excel and be acknowledged for their efforts.

Let’s continue to celebrate students' achievements and inspire them to reach their full potential! 🎉👏
