In a significant move aimed at promoting the well-being of both educators and students, the Department of Education (DepEd) has officially released DepEd Order No. 009, s. 2025, amending the earlier guidelines set forth in DO 009, s. 2024 regarding the school calendar and activities for School Year 2024-2025.
✅ What’s New in DepEd Order No. 009, s. 2025?
One of the key highlights of the amendment is the introduction of a 60-day End of School Year (EOSY) break for teachers and learners, effective from April 16 to June 1, 2025. This policy reinforces the value of work-life balance in the education sector while supporting continuous improvement and readiness for the upcoming school year.
📅 Breakdown of the New 60-Day Vacation Policy
📘 For Teachers (including ALS and ALIVE Teachers)
-
30-day flexible vacation period within the break.
-
Teachers can choose continuous or staggered vacation days based on personal preference and school needs.
-
Deadline for vacation schedule submission: Before April 16, 2025.
-
Teachers may still voluntarily join summer programs, training, or activities and earn Vacation Service Credits (VSC).
📘 For Learners
-
Students enjoy a full 60-day break unless enrolled in mandatory summer programs.
-
Those attending summer classes will take vacation days outside the May 8 to June 6 window.
👩🏫 Special Guidelines for Specific Educator Groups
📌 Alternative Learning System (ALS) Teachers
-
Covered by the 30-day break if learners complete their targets by April 15, 2025.
-
Not entitled to traditional sick/vacation leave but may earn VSC under DO 013, s. 2024.
📌 Arabic Language and Islamic Values Education (ALIVE) Teachers
-
Enjoy the same 30-day break and must not be given school tasks during their chosen break period.
📌 School Heads
-
Not covered by the 30-day vacation due to their entitlement to regular leave credits.
📌 Important Additional Notes
-
No Performance Management Evaluation System (PMES) activities shall be conducted during the 30-day break.
-
Voluntary participation in summer seminars, curriculum training, or school events is allowed and may lead to additional VSCs.
-
Teachers may still engage in other personal or civic activities, including election work or sports events, during their declared breaks.
🔔 Why This Matters
This amendment marks a progressive shift in DepEd’s policies, acknowledging the growing need for teacher wellness and learner recovery time. The flexibility in vacation scheduling empowers teachers to better manage their work-life balance while maintaining school operations and preparing for the next academic year.
